Protective Styles Maintenance & Care

Protective Style Maintenance and Care

Protective styles are a great way to start and prolong a healthy hair journey. However, the work does not stop there! Keep reading to learn more ways to properly care for your new style!

Satin Pillow Cases

Satin pillow cases are a must have! These are life savers for those days where you simply don't have the time or energy to properly wrap your hair. The satin material acts as a satin bonnet, protecting your strands and preventing the breakage and frizz that is usually caused by cotton pillow cases.

Satin Bonnets and Head Wraps

Wearing one or the other is great, but wearing them together will ensure that your style lasts longer! Securely wrapping your new style with a statin scarf will prevent frizz and aid in locking in moisture. Placing a satin bonnet on top will protect the ends of your style ( especially long braids or locs), preventing frizz as well.

Scalp Nourishment

Scalp nourishment is essential to healthy hair growth! Massage your favorite moisturizing oil into your scalp at night and then wrap your hair with your satin scarf to lock in the moisture. Because our hair already produces natural oils, applying other oils can cause your scalp to feel greasy, leading to itchiness or discomfort. In this instance, it is best to clean your scalp. Although protective styles can be safely shampooed and conditioned, if you do not have the time to do so, rubbing a cotton pad soaked in Witch Hazel along your parts and wedges, works just as well!

Mousse, Mousse, Mousse!

After a few weeks of wearing your style, you may begin to notice some frizz. This is normal! But the good news is, it is a very easy fix. All you’ll need is some mousse or wrapping foam! (BONUS TIP: If your hair frizzes up easily in humidity or high temperatures, spraying a small amount of hair spray after the mousse is applied, then wrapping your hair as usual will keep the fly aways down!)

Loosen The Ponytail!

Yes, high ponies are a cute go to style for knotless braids, box braids, or locs, but they can also be extremely unhealthy if done too often. Tight ponytails cause a lot of tension around the hairline, eventually leading to hair loss in those areas. Low manipulation is best! If you do decide to wear a high or low pony, using a satin scrunchie will prevent unnecessary breakage normally caused by elastic bands.

Let Your Scalp Breath

Although the tips previously listed offer ways in which to prevent flyaways and frizz by using different products,  excessive product overload can be unhealthy. Take a break every once in a while from all the products you normally use. It is important to remember to let your scalp breathe! Remember, things such as frizz and flyaways are normal and natural! Your style is still beautiful!

Human Hair Curls

Human hair curls are the PERFECT addition to any style! They last longer than synthetic hair and are extremely easy to maintain. Human hair curls can be shampooed and conditioned regularly without altering the integrity of the hair. If you notice that your curls are beginning to look a little frizzy, tangled, or dull, raking water, a leave-in conditioning spray, or mouse through them will bring them back to life!

Synthetic Curls

Synthetic curls are also a very cute add on to your style, however, they can be a little more difficult to maintain. Because the hair is synthetic, it becomes matted and tangled easily. Using mousse on this hair can help bring it back to life for a short period of time.

Wishing you the best of luck on your healthy hair journey!
